Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why offer another secondary option in Warkworth district?
Ans. Families in the wider Warkworth District currently have limited options for secondary education AND…. Horizon school’s vision is to provide more than just a high school. We will provide an environment where students can develop and grow to fulfil their potential and take their place as confident innovative and creative leaders in our society. If you could have anything you wanted in a brand new secondary school, what would you dream for? Give us your ideas by completing the form at the bottom of this page.
Ans 1.
Choosing for locally unique teaching and learning approaches.
We are passionate about offering education that
-values the individual and his/her passions, interests and future possibilities
-provides for personalised, self-directed learning opportunities
-facilitates real life learning and authentic projects
-makes great use of expertise in the wider community through mentoring face to face and via the internet
-is innovative; equips students to learn how to learn and how to think well (learning to learn)
-is based in a strong sense of community
Ans 2. Choosing for special character education. The only relatively local option for Christian secondary education is KingsWay School, Orewa, which is 40 minutes drive from Horizon College. While this option serves the southern Rodney community well, we believe that an additional integrated school option provides parents with choice and in particular the choice of parents to offer their children a local special character school education beyond Year 8.
Ans 3. Choosing for a smaller and supportive community environment. Learners in adolesence are undergoing changes at a rapid rate as they move into adulthood. There can be an increased intensity of physical, relational and image related issues. Our learners have leadership opportunities that are often not available in larger schools. Learners can be part of school shows, cultural events, and teams that successfully compete with local schools. When they succeed, our students have a chance to step up and be in the limelight. They won’t be lost in the crowd. At Horizon College, everyone will get a chance to shine!
Learners will feel included in our school. We will make a special effort to include students of all abilities, all cultures, in the programmes we offer.
Ans 4. Choosing for diversity in our local community. A number of families in the Warkworth area send their teenagers 50-60 minutes to the North Shore for secondary education. We provide a closer alternative that will provide an excellent education.

This gives us access to our auditorium, tennis courts, offices and multiple classrooms as soon as we are ready to fill them! KingsWay Trust has a good track record with the Ministry of Education, having overseen the development of schools such as KingsWay School in Orewa and Jireh School in West Auckland.
